How to update the League of Legends client?

Do I have to do anything?

No, you don’t have to do anything just upgrade it and once you are upgraded just log in as usual. You can use the Stay Signed In feature to save your username and password so you can skip the login screen.

Can’t install the League client through the patcher?

If you have the latest patcher it will automatically migrate you to the upgrade client. If it does not do like this then your patcher is so out date. In fact, it is so out of date that it does not even know what a League Client Update is now. So the solution of this problem is simply uninstall the game and re install it

The latest patcher should look exactly like this image below:

If it doesn’t appear like this then your patcher is definitely out of date. Lets update it and get you into the new and improved client.

Windows:

  • To remove League of Legends from your taskbar, right-click its icon and choose “Unpin from taskbar.”
  • Open the folder C:\Riot Games\League of Legends and double-click on lol.launcher.
    • If you see the error “PVP.net Patcher Kernel has stopped working” right-click on the launcher and click “Run as administrator”.
  • When the update is done, the patcher will open and look like the example shown above.
  • Click the launch button when it’s ready. This will close the patcher and open the League client. If the client doesn’t show up immediately, check Task Manager to see if it’s running.
  • The client will open and a message will pop up saying it needs to update your shortcuts. If the shortcuts don’t update automatically follow these steps to fix them.

Mac:

  • Go to Applications, right-click or Ctrl + click your League of Legends application and select “Show Package Contents”.
  • Go to Contents of LoL and click on “Play League of Legends”.
  • The user kernel will then launch in your taskbar and begin to update your patcher. This may take a few minutes.
  • Once it finishes updating, the patcher should launch and look like the example above.
  • Once the launch button becomes active, click on it. This will close the patcher and open the League Client. It may take a moment for the client to load.
  • The League client will open and show a pop-up saying it needs to update your shortcuts. If they don’t update automatically, follow these steps to fix them.

The League client updated correctly, but shortcuts still start the old patcher

When you install the League client it will automatically update your old League of Legends shortcuts to new ones. It will try this three times before stopping. First, we will show you the easy way and if that does not work we have other steps you can try.

Windows:

  • Go to C:\Riot Games\League of Legends and delete the directory named “Config”. Stay in the League of Legends directory.
  • Now double click on “LeagueClient.exe” which is located in the League of Legends directory.
  • Click on the launch button once it’s enabled. This will close out the patcher and launch the League client. The client may take a minute to appear (check Task Manager if you don’t see it right away).
  • Once the League client launches then a popup will appear informing you that the client is about to perform the shortcut migration.
  • Click OK. Now, if you have UAC (User Account Control Settings) turned on you will see a shield pop up appear either in your taskbar or in a screen takeover.
    • If the shield appears in your taskbar then click on it and select “Yes” on the next popup.
    • If the popup takes over your screen you just have to click “Yes“.
  • After a few minutes thenyou should see your shortcuts update into new icons.

Workaround: If the client couldn’t migrate your shortcuts

  • Go to C:\Riot Games\League of Legends and right click on the League client. Select “Pin to Taskbar”.
  • (Optional) Right click on the League client and select “Pin to Start Menu”.
  • (Optional) Right click on the League client and select “Send to the Desktop“.
  • Manually delete any old League of Legends shortcuts on your desktop and unpin the old shortcuts from your taskbar and start menu.

Mac:

NOTE: Only an account with admin permissions can migrate shortcuts on a Mac. If you are a standard user the following steps will not work.

  • first, go to Applications.
  • Right click or Ctrl + click your League of Legends application and select “how Package Contents“.
  • Go to Contents then LoL and delete the directory named “Config”. Stay in the LoL directory.
  • Now double click on the LeagueClient icon that is located in the LoL directory.
  • Once the client launches, a popup will appear informing you that the client is about to perform the shortcut migration. Click “OK“.
  • It may take a few minutes, but you will see your shortcuts update into new icons.
